わが国をはじめ、北半球に広く分布しています。氷河期の遺存植物で、寒冷地の湿地や河川などの浅い水中に生えます。太い根茎は匍匐して群生し、高さは２０〜５０センチほどになります。葉は長楕円形で３出複葉です。４月から７月ごろ、総状花序をだし白い花を咲かせます。「またたび」のように、ネコを酔わせる成分が含まれます。中国語では「睡菜（shi cai）」と呼ばれます。 |

The Bogbean (Menyanthes trifoliata) belongs to the family Menyanthaceae. It is a perennial herb that is distributed throughout Japan, as well as to the Northern Hemisphere widely. It is a relict plant of glacial age. This herb grows in shallow waters of marshes and streams in cold climates gregariously, and can reach 20-50 cm in height. The rhizomatous roots are thick and spread by creeping on the grounds. The leaves are trifoliate and divided into oblong lobes. The white flowers bloom in the racemes from April to July. The plant is a great favorite of cats as well as the silver vine. In Chinese, it is called "睡菜" (shi cai). |
