わが国の本州、関東地方から東海・近畿地方に分布しています。山地の尾根などに生え、高さは１〜３メートルほどになります。菱形の葉が、枝先に３個輪生します。４月から６月ごろ、葉に先駆けて紅紫色の花を咲かせます。ほかの「みつばつつじ」類とは異なり、雄しべが５個あるのが特徴です。

ツツジ科ツツジ属の落葉低木で、学名は Rhododendron dilatatum。英名はありません。

"Mitsuba-tsutsuji" (Rhododendron dilatatum) belongs to Ericaceae (the Azalea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed westward from Kanto district to Tokai and Kinki district of Honshu in Japan. This tree grows on montane ridges and can reach 1-3 m in height. The leaves are lozenged and arranged in three whorls on the terminal branches. The magenta flowers bloom from April to June before foliation. It is defined that the flower has five stamens, though other species of Japanese triphyllous azalea have ten stamens.
