The Three-leaved acanthopanax (Eleutherococcus trifoliatus) belongs to Araliaceae (the Ginseng family). It is an evergreen shrub that is distributed to Miyako Island in the Nansei Islands of Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Philippines, China and the Himalayas. It grows in thickets, crawls on trees and rocks, and grows 2 to 7 m high. The branches and petioles have scattered short, pointed, recurved spines. The leaves are usually trifoliate, with petioles 2-6 cm long. Small yellowish-green flowers bloom on the spherical umbels from August to November. In Taiwanese, it is called "三葉五加".
