わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに北太平洋地域に分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯に生え、高さは３０〜１００センチになります。葉は卵形から卵円形で無毛です。６月から７月ごろ、葉の展開とともに、今年枝の葉腋に扁平な壺形の花を咲かせます。花冠は白色から赤色を帯び、先端は５浅裂します。秋に直径１センチほどの黒い液果をつけます。

ツツジ科スノキ属の落葉低木で、学名は Vaccinium ovalifolium f. platyanthum。英名は Alaska blueberry。

Alaska blueberry (Vaccinium ovalifolium f. platyanthum) belongs to the Ericacea (the Azalea family). It is a small deciduous tree that is distributed from Chubu district north to Hokkaido and the North Pacific Region. This tree grows in sub-alpine to alpine zone, and can reach 30-100 cm in height. The leaves are ovate to ovate-round and glabrous. The flat urn-shaped flowers bloom at the axils of new branches with new leaves in June to July. The corolla is white to red tinged with five lobed tips. The fruit is a black berry, about 1 cm across, and ripen in fall.
