The "Miyama-uzura" (Goodyera schlechtendaliana) belongs to Orchidaceae (the Orchid family). It is an evergreen herb that is native to various parts of Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This herb grows on montane wettish forest floors, and it can reach 15-25 cm in height. The stems crawl on the ground and bear roots at each nodes. The leaves are ovate and arranged alternate intensively on the stems. They have white netted patches on a dark green ground. The pale pink, more than ten flowers bloom one-sideways at the upper part of stem from August to September. The flowers and peduncles have dense fine hairs. The Japanese name is derived from the leaf-mottles resemble the pattern of quail wing. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "斑葉蘭" and "斑葉蘭" (ban ye lan) in Chinese.
