わが国の本州、東北地方から北陸、中国地方に分布しています。山野に生え、高さは１〜２メートルになります。もっともよく植栽される「はぎ」です。全体に絹状の伏毛があり、葉は３出複葉で互生して、花期には枝が地につくほど枝垂れます。長楕円形をした小葉の先端が尖るのが特徴です。７月から９月ごろ、葉腋から長い総状花序をだし、紫紅色の蝶形花を咲かせます。

マメ科ハギ属の落葉低木で、学名は Lespedeza thunbergii。英名はありません。

"Miyagino-hagi" (Lespedeza thunbergii) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a small diciduous tree that is native to Honshu in Japan, from Tohoku district to Hokuriku-Chugoku district. This tree grows in mountains and fields, and can reach 1-2 m in height. It is a most popular planting Lespedeza in Japan. The whole plant has silky appressed hairs. The slender stems are weeping as they touched the ground. The leaves are trifoliate and arranged in alternate. The leaflets are oblong with acute tips. The longs racemes are borne at leaf axils and bloom magenta papilionacenous flowers from July to September.
