わが国の本州北部から北海道に分布しています。亜高山帯から高山帯の岩場や砂礫地に生え、高さは０．５〜１．５メートルになります。幹は褐色で縦に裂け、地面を這うように斜上します。枝は赤褐色を帯びます。葉は針状で３輪生し、先端は鋭く尖ります。葉の基部はわずかに弓状に曲がります。雌雄異株で、６月から７月ごろに開花。果実は卵形の球果で、翌年の秋に紫黒色に熟します。

ヒノキ科ネズミサシ属の常緑低木で、学名は Juniperus communis var. nipponica。英名はありません。

"Miyama-nezu" (Juniperus communis var. nipponica) belongs to Cupressaceae (the Cypress family). It is a small evergreen tree that is distributed from northern Honshu to Hokkaido in Japan. This tree grows in rocky areas and sandy gravel areas of the subalpine zone to the alpine zone, and up to a height of 0.5-1.5 m. The trunk is furrowed longitudinally with brown color, and it is ascending like crawling on the ground. The branches are reddish brown. The leaves are needle-like and three whorled with acute tips. The base of the leaf bends slightly in an arc. It is dioecious, and the flowers bloom in June to July. The fruits are ovate strobiles and ripe purple black in the fall of the following year.
