The "Miyama-yanagi" (Salix reinii) belongs to Salicaceae (the Willow family). It is a small deciduous tree that is an endemic species of Japan and distributed northward from Chubu district of Honshu to Hokkaido. This tree grows in subalpine to alpine zone and can reach 20-100 cm in height. The new branches are yellowish-brown. The leaves are elliptic to obovate with wavy toothed edges. The reverse sides are powdery white. It is dioecious and the flowers bloom as soon as foliation from May to June. The fruits are capsules and split open in June to July.
