"Miyama-zakura" (Prunus maximowiczii) belongs to Rosaceae (the Rose family). It is a tall decidouos tree that is native to various parts of Japan, the Korean Peninsula, northeastern China, Sakhalin and Ussuri. The tree grows in mountains to underneath sub-alpine zone, and can reach 5-10 m in height. The leaves are obovate-oblong and alternate with indented duplicato-serratus edges. The white flowers bloom in the racemes from May to June after foliation. The fruits are globose drupes, and ripen in black from July to August. The leafy bracts remain at the base of peduncles.
