わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島に分布しています。水田や沼地に生え、高さは２０〜４０センチになります。名前は、葉のかたちが「かんあおい（寒葵）」に似ていることから。むかしは「なぎ（菜葱）」と呼んで、食用にしたそうです。根生葉は心形で長い柄があります。８月から１０月ごろ、淡い青紫色の花を咲かせます。

ミズアオイ科ミズアオイ属の一年草で、学名は Monochoria korsakowii。英名は Mizu-aoi。

"Mizu-aoi" (Monochoria korsakowii) belongs to Pontederiaceae (the Pickerelweed family). It is an annual herb that is native all over Japan and the Korean Peninsula. This herb grows in rice fields or marshes and can reach 20-40 cm in height. The leaves resemble to "Kan-aoi" (Asarum nipponicum). They are called "Nagi" and used for food in former days. The basal leaves are cordate with long petioles. The pale bluish-purple flowers bloom from August to October.
