The Tidal-marsh flatsedge (Cyperus serotinus) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed all over Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, India and Europe. This herb grows in wet paddy and marshes, and can reach 50-80 cm in height. It spreads by narrow rhizomes and clumping. The leaves are linear 5-8 mm wide and basal. The 5-7 branches of inflorescences are borne on the stem apices from August to October. The spikelets are green at first and shade into deep reddish purple. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "水莎草" and "水莎草" (shui suo cao).
