わが国の各地をはじめ、朝鮮半島や中国、インド、ヨーロッパに分布しています。湿田や湿地などに生え、高さは５０〜８０センチになります。細長い根茎を伸ばして広がり、群生します。葉は線形で幅５〜８ミリ、根生します。８月から１０月ごろ、茎頂に５〜７個の花序枝をだし、緑色の小穂をつけます。小穂は次第に濃い赤紫色に変わります。

カヤツリグサ科カヤツリグサ属の一年草で、学名は Cyperus serotinus。英名は Tidal-marsh flatsedge。

The tidal-marsh flatsedge (Cyperus serotinus) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed all over Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula, India and Europe. This herb grows in wet paddy and marshes, and can reach 50-80 cm in height. It spreads by narrow rhizomes and clumping. The leaves are linear 5-8 mm wide and basal. The 5-7 branches of inflorescences are borne on the stem apices from August to October. The spikelets are green at first and shade into deep reddish purple.
