The Duck lettuce (Ottelia alismoides) belongs to Hydrocharitaceae (the Frogbit family). It is an annual herb that is distributed from Honshu to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, Southeast Asia, and northern Australia. It is a water plant that grows in lakes, reservoirs, and rice paddies. The leaves are basal, submersed, lanceolate to ovate, and have long petioles. From August to October, it extends a scape from between the leaves and produces white to pale pink flowers on the surface of the water. The petals are three in number and circular. After flowering, the scape shrinks and submerges underwater, and when the seeds are ripe, it emerges from the water again to disperse the seeds on the surface of the water. In Taiwanese, it is called "水車前草", and in Chinese, it is called "龍舌草" (long she cao).
