北アメリカの東部が原産です。沼や湿原に自生しています。高さは１〜２メートルほどになり、７月から９月ごろ大輪の真紅の花を咲かせます。太い根茎で越冬します。和名は、葉が「もみじ」のように深く３〜５裂して、「あおい」の仲間ということから。

アオイ科フヨウ属の多年草で、学名は Hibiscus caccineus。英名は Scarlet rose mallow。

The Scarlet rose mallow (Hibiscus caccineus) belongs to Malvaceae (the Mallow family). It is a perennial herb that is native to eastern North America. This herb grows in swamps and bogs, and up to a height of 1-2 m. The large crimson flowers bloom from July to September. This herb passes the winter in thick rhizome. The Japanese name is derived from the maple-like leaves and belonging the mallow.
