アジアからアフリカの熱帯地方の原産です。現在は、熱帯から亜熱帯に広く帰化しています。地下には塊根があり、数メートルの蔓を伸ばします。葉は掌状複葉で、５〜７個の小葉があります。６月から１１月ごろ、葉腋に花柄をだし、直径７センチくらいで紅紫色、漏斗状の花を咲かせます。白色や青紫色の園芸品種もあります。別名で「たいわんあさがお（台湾朝顔）」とも呼ばれます。

The ivy-leaved morning glory (Ipomoea cairica) belongs to Convolvulaceae (the Bindweed family). It is a perennial herb that is native to tropical Asia and Africa. Nowadays it is naturalized widely from tropical to sub-tropical areas. This herb bears tuberous root below ground and the stem can reach several meters. The leaves are digitate with 5-7 leaflets. The peduncles are borne on the axils and bloom magenta funnel-shaped flowers; about 7 cm across from June to November. There are also cultivars; white or blue-purple flower-colors.
