The "Momiji-charumeru-so" (Mitella acerina) belongs to Saxifragaceae (the Saxifrage family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and is distributed to the Sea of Japan side from Kyoto Prefecture to Shiga and Fukui Prefectures. It grows along valleys in mountainous areas and is 20 to 40 cm tall. The leaves are broadly ovate, palmately lobed with 5 to 7 lobes, and basal with a long petiole. From April to June, the flower scapes grow and produce reddish, pale yellow-green flowers at the top. The petals are fishbone-shaped with three or four lobes, and the sepals are yellowish green.
