「はなひょうたんぼく（花瓢箪木）」の一品種です。中国の北部とモンゴルに分布しています。高さは５メートルほどになり、葉の表面は濃い緑色で裏面は紫がかっています。若い枝は濃紫色をしています。春から夏にかけて白い花を咲かせますが、やがて黄色に変化します。果実は濃赤色に熟し、２つ並びます。母種の「はなひょうたんぼく（Lonicera maackii）」よりも、樹形がひろがり花も華やかです。中国語では「短柄忍冬（Duan bing ren dong）」と呼ばれます。

スイカズラ科スイカズラ属の落葉低木で、学名は Lonicera maackii f. podocarpa。英名は Mongolian honeysuckle。

The Mongolian honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii f. podocarpa) belongs to Caprifoliaceae (the Honeysuckle family). It is a small deciduous tree that is a variety of "Amur honeysuckle". It is distributed in northern China and Mongolia. The leaves are dark green with a purplish underside. The young branches are dark purple. White flowers bloom from spring to summer, eventually turning yellow. The fruits ripen to dark red and are arranged in pairs. It has a more spreading form and more spectacular flowers than its mother species, Amur honeysuckle. In Chinese, it is called "短柄忍冬" (Duan bing ren dong).
