キンポウゲ科モミジカラマツ属の多年草で、学名は Trautvetteria caroliniensis var. japonica。英名は False bugbane。
The False bugbane (Trautvetteria caroliniensis var. japonica) belongs to Ranunculaceae (the Buttercup family). It is a perennial herb that is native from Chubu district of Honshu north to Hokkaido in Japan, as well as the Kuril Islands and the Ussuri region. This herb grows in sub-alpine to alpine marshes, along snow patches and it can reach 40-60 cm in height. The leaves are round or semicircle, devided into 7-9 clefts and radical. The white flowers bloom in the terminal and axilary clusters from July to August. They are apetalous and having visible white stamens. After flowering, it produces Konpeito-like (Japanese sugar candy) fruits.
