オーストラリアの南東部から西部、ニューサウスウェールズ州からビクトリア州、タスマニア州それに西オーストラリア州に分布しています。海岸沿いから内陸の砂礫地に生え、高さは５〜８メートルになります。樹幹は円錐形で、淡緑色の枝は枝垂れます。小枝は針形で葉の機能を果たし、本当の葉は小さな三角形の鱗片状です。晩秋から冬にかけて、本年枝の枝先に雄花序と基部に雌花序をつけます。果実は広楕円形の球果です。耐塩性があり、海岸地帯の防風林として植栽されることがあります。

モクマオウ科モクマオウ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Casuarina stricta (syn. Allocasuarina verticillata)。英名は Drooping she-oak。

The drooping she-oak (Casuarina stricta) belongs to the family Casuarinaceae. It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to south-easern and western Australia, from New South Wales to Victoria, Tasmania and West Australia. This tree grows in coastal areas or inland gravel areas and can reach 5-8 m in height. The crown is conical, and the pale green branches are drooping. The twigs are needle-like which have the function of leaves, and the true folliages are small scale-like. The male clusters are borne on the terminal twigs and the female ones are borne at the base of twigs from late fall to winter. The fruits are broad-elliptic strobiles. This tree is salt tollerant and used as coastal shelter belt.
