北アフリカのリビアからエジプト北部、それにクレタ島南部が原産です。古くから観賞用植物として栽培され、主に温帯バイオームに帰化しています。茎は直立して分枝し、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。葉は卵形からへら形で、縁は全縁または３裂します。夏から初秋にかけて、白色または淡黄色の花を円錐花序に咲かせます。雄しべは赤みを帯びます。また花には香りがあり、香水用の精油原料として、また鑑賞用に栽培されます。これは、フランス語で「小さなダーリン」を意味する「ミニョネット（Mignonette）」と呼ばれることが多く、何世紀にもわたって園芸家や詩人の心をとらえてきました。

The Garden mignonette (Reseda odorata) belongs to the family Resedaceae. It is an annual herb that is native to North Africa from Libya to northern Egypt and southern Crete. It has been cultivated as an ornamental plant since ancient times and has become naturalized mainly in temperate biomes. The stems are erect and branched, 30-60 cm tall. The leaves are ovate to spatulate with entire margins or three lobes. White or pale yellow flowers bloom in panicles from summer to early fall. The stamens are reddish.
The flowers are fragrant and are grown for their essential oil, which is used in perfumes, as well as for viewing. It is often called "Mignonette", French for "little darling", and has captured the hearts of gardeners and poets for centuries.
