アフリカ東部のタンザニアとケニアに分布しています。海岸に近い落葉樹の疎林やサバンナ草原に生え、高さは６メートルほどになります。幹は直立し、直径６０センチになります。葉は明るい緑色で光沢があり、直立または四方に広がります。長さは２〜３メートルです。雄花序は狭い円筒形、雌花序は広楕円形から樽形です。地元の人々は、茹でて乾燥させた種子をデンプン粉にして利用するそうです。

ソテツ科オニソテツ属の常緑低木で、学名は Encephalartos hildebrandtii。英名は Mombasa cycad。

The Mombasa cycad (Encephalartos hildebrandtii) belongs to Cycadaceae (the Cycad family). It is a small evergreen tree that is native to Tanzania and Kenya. This tree grows in coastal sparse dedicuous forests and savannah grassland, and can reach about 6 m in height. The trunk is erect and 60 cm diameter. The leaves are bright green, glossy and erect to spreading, 2-3 m long. The male inflorescence is narrowly cylindrical and the female one is broadly oblong to barrel-shaped. Local natives prepare a flour from the boiled and dried seeds.
