モナルダ属は、北アメリカに１６種ほどが分布しています。高さは２０〜９０センチになり、葉をつぶすと強い芳香があります。さまざまな花色をもつ園芸品種が作出されています。属名は、はじめて発見し記載した１６世紀のスペイン人医師、「ニコラス・モナルデス（Nicholas Monardez）」に因みます。

The Monarda genus belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a annual or perennial herb that is distributed roughly 16 species in North America. This herb can reach 20-90 cm in height, and exude highly fragrant when crushed the leaves. There are many cultivars with various flower-colors. Monarda genus is named after 16th Spanish physician, Nicholas Monardez who first discovered and described it.
