北アメリカの東部および西部のワシントン州・オレゴン州に分布しています。湿り気のある林内や茂み、河岸などに生え、高さは６０〜１５０センチになります。葉は卵形から披針形で対生し、縁には粗い鋸歯があります。６月から８月ごろ、茎頂に頭状花序をだし、鮮赤色の筒状花を咲かせます。アメリカインディアンの人々は、この葉の浸出液をオスウィーゴ茶（Oswego tea）と呼び、愛飲していたそうです。芳香が「ベルガモットオレンジ」に似ていることから、「ベルガモット」とも呼ばれます。和名では「たいまつばな（松明花）」です。 |

シソ科モナルダ属の多年草で、学名は Monarda didyma。英名は Scarlet beebalm、Oswego tea、Bergamot。 |

The Scarlet beebalm (Monarda didyma) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is native to eastern North America and Washington, Ohio in the western United States. This herb grows in wet woodlands, scrubs or stream banks and can reach 60-150 cm in height. The leaves are ovate to lanceolate and opposite with coarsely-toothed margins. The capitulums are borne and bloom bright red tubular flowers from June to August. This herb has similar odor of the Bergamot orange. The Oswego Indians had been used for Oswego tea which extracted from the leaves. |
