わが国の本州から四国・九州、それに台湾や朝鮮半島、中国に分布しています。海岸に近い山地に生え、雌雄異株で、高さは５〜２０メートルになります。楕円形の葉は皮質で互生します。４月ごろ、小さな黄緑色の花を咲かせます。秋に果実は赤く熟します。樹皮からは鳥もちがつくられました。写真中１〜中３は、白実種です。台湾華語では「全縁葉冬青」、中国語では「全縁冬青（quan yuan dong qing）」と呼ばれます。
モチノキ科モチノキ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Ilex integra。英名は Mochi tree。
The Mochi tree (Ilex integra) belongs to Aquifoliaceae (the Holly family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is distributed from Honshu west to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula and China. This tree grows in coastal mountains and can reach 5-20 m in height. It is dioecious. The leaves are elliptic, leathery and alternate. The small yellowish-green flowers come in April. The fruits are ripen red in fall. The birdlime was made from the barks. From second to fourth photos are white-fruiting variety. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is "全縁葉冬青" and "全縁冬青" (quan yuan dong qing) in Chinese.
