わが国の本州、関東地方以西から四国・九州、それに台湾や朝鮮半島、中国に分布しています。海岸に近い林内の湿ったところに生え、高さは３０〜６０センチになります。葉は３出複葉で、小葉は卵形です。３月から５月ごろ、真っ直ぐに花茎を伸ばして、暗紫色から緑白色の仏炎苞に包まれた花を咲かせます。和名は、仏炎苞のかたちが武蔵の国で作られていた馬具の鐙（あぶみ）に似ていることから。この塊茎は有毒ですが、漢方では天南星（てんなんしょう）と呼んで、薬用にされます。台湾華語では「申跋」、中国語では「普陀南星（pu tuo nan xing）」と呼ばれます。

サトイモ科テンナンショウ属の多年草で、学名は Arisaema ringens。英名は Jack in the pulpit、Musasi-abumi。

The Jack in the pulpit (Arisaema ringens) belongs to Araceae (the Arum family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed westward from Kanto district of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as the Korean Peninsula and China. This herb grows in coastal forests and can reach 30-60 cm in height. The leaves are trifoliate compound with ovate leaflets. The small flowers that covered with dark purple to greenish white spathes come in March to May. The Japanese name comes from the shape of the spathe bracts, which resemble the stirrups of a harness made in the country of Musashi. The tubers are poisonous though they used for Chinese herbal medicine. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "申跋" and "普陀南星" (pu tuo nan xing) in Chinese.
