The Orpine (Hylotelephium pallescens) belongs to Crassulaceae (the Orpine family). It is a perennial evergreen herb that is distributed in Hokkaido of Japan, as well as northern China, Mongolia, and southern and eastern Siberia. It grows in mountainous areas and grasslands, and is 30-50 cm tall. The stem is erect, and the leaves are long oblong-ovate to elliptic-lanceolate with entire to sparsely serrate margins. The leaves have reddish-brown spots on their upper surfaces. From August to September, small white or pale pink flowers bloom in dense clusters in umbels at the top of the stem. The petals are star-shaped with five pointed tips. The fruit is a lanceolate-elliptic follicle. In Chinese, it is called "白八宝" (bai ba bao).
