The "Munin-hisakaki" (Eurya boninensis) belongs to Theaceae (the Tea family). It is a small evergreen tree that is This species is endemic to Japan’s Ogasawara Islands and the Volcano Islands. It grows in sunny, dry shrublands and reaches a height of about 3 m. The leaves are oblong and glossy, with distinct serrations extending from the tip to about two-thirds of the leaf’s length. It is dioecious. From February to April, it produces numerous pale cream-colored flowers, about 5 mm in diameter, on the undersides of its branches. The fruit is a berry that ripens to a purplish-black color around November. It is classified as Endangered (EN) in Category IB of the Ministry of the Environment’s Red List.
