The "Munin-nakiri-suge" (Carex hattoriana) belongs to Cyperaceae (the Sedge family). It is an evergreen herb that is an endemic species of Japan's Ogasawara Islands. It grows on the forest floor, reaching a height of 50 to 70 cm. The rhizome is short, producing clustered linear leaves. The leaves are narrow, about 1.5 to 3.5 mm wide. The leaf texture is soft, and the serrations along the leaf margins are not as sharp as those seen in other species of "nakiri-suge". From September to October, it extends a scape bearing 2 to 4 spikelets.
