The "Munin-oni-yabu-sotetsu" (Cyrtomium falcatum ssp. australe) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed to Kochi Prefecture in Shikoku, Nagasaki and Kagoshima Prefectures in Kyushu, Okinawa Prefecture, the Ogasawara Islands, and Lanyu Island in Taiwan. It mainly grows in the forest floor or at the edge of forests near the coast, and is 40 to 80 cm tall. The leaves are pinnate compound that are dark green, shiny, and thinly leathery. The leaf stalk is light green and has yellowish-brown scales. The sorus is scattered all over the pinna and is round, and the indisum is grayish white with a blackish brown or grayish white center. The Japanese name "muni" (meaning "uninhabited") is derived from the Ogasawara Islands where it is found, which were once called "the uninhabited archipelago". In Taiwanese, it is called "à_ŠC‘S‰ŠÑ眾˜n".
