わが国の九州、種子島の固有種です。近くの屋久島に分布する「くわいばかんあおい（慈姑葉寒葵）」の変種とされています。低山の林下に生え。高さは１０センチほどになります。葉は卵状三角形から長卵形で、基部は心形です。葉には光沢があり、裏面の葉脈には短毛が散生します。１０月から１月ごろ、淡い緑色から暗黒紫色の花を咲かせます。花には花弁がなく、萼筒があります。萼裂片はほぼ三角形で、花冠の真ん中に白色の輪斑模様が入ります。

ウマノスズクサ科カンアオイ属の多年草で、学名は Asarum kumageanum var. satakeanum (Heterotropa kumageana var. satakeana)。英名はありません。

The "Murakumo-aoi" (Asarum kumageanum var. satakeanum) belongs to Aristolochiaceae (the Birthwort family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Tanegashima Island in Kyushu, Japan. It is believed to be a variant of the "Kuwaiba-kan-aoi" that grows on nearby Yaku Island. It grows under forests in low mountains. It is about 10 cm tall. The leaves are ovate-triangular to long ovate with a heart-shaped base. It produces pale green to dark purple flowers from October to January. The flowers are petalless and have a calyx tube. The calyx lobes are nearly triangular, and the center of the corolla has a white ring-shaped pattern.
