わが国の本州、中部地方以北から北海道、それに朝鮮半島や中国東北部、東シベリアに分布しています。日当たりのよい草原に生えて、高さは３０〜４５センチになります。葉は線形で対生し、茎には稜があります。６月から７月ごろ、茎の上部に淡い青紫色の花を咲かせます。名前は、滋賀県近江八幡市の武佐町で発見されたことに因みます。写真６・下は、園芸品種の「スカイブルー（cv. Sky Blue）」。

シソ科ムシャリンドウ属の多年草で、学名は Dracocephalum argunense。英名は Dragon's head。

The dragon's head (Dracocephalum argunense) belongs to Lamiaceae (the Mint family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed northward from Chubu> district of Honshu to Hokkaido, as well as the Korean Peninsula, north-eastern China and East Siberia. This herb grows in sunny grasslands and can reach 30-45 cm in height. The leaves are linear and arranged in opposite. The stems are ridged. The pale bluish-purple flowers bloom on the upper stems from June to July. The Japanese name is derived from the findspot; Musa-cho in Omihachiman City of Shiga Prefecture.
