「つばき」はわが国の特産種ですが、これは１９９７年に京都府宇治市にある平等院鳳凰堂の庭園発掘調査で、池の底から見つかった室町時代中期の種子から発芽したものです。宇治市植物公園で育てられ、２００４年の春に初めて開花しました。

ツバキ科ツバキ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Camellia japonica。英名はありません。

The "Camellia" is a special product of Japan, but it was germinated from the seeds of the middle Muromachi period (about 560 years ago) found at the bottom of the pond in the garden excavation survey of the Phoenix Hall of Byodoin Temple in Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture in 1997. It was raised in Uji City Botanical Garden and first bloomed in the spring of 2004.
