北アメリカの中部から東部の大部分に分布しています。草原地帯に生え、高さは１〜１．５メートルになります。葉は３出複葉で、卵形から倒披針形の小葉がつきます。また線状披針形の托葉が、短い葉柄の基部に２個つきます。４月から８月にかけて、総状花序に濃青色の蝶形花を咲かせます。果実は長楕円形の豆果で、青黒色に熟します。

マメ科ムラサキセンダイハギ属の多年草で、学名は Baptisia australis。英名は Blue wild indigo。

The blue wild indigo (Baptisia australis) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to much of the central and eastern North America. This herb grows in the prairies and can reach 1-1.5 m in height. The leaves are trifoliate with ovate to oblanceolate leaflets. The two linear-lanceolate stipulars are arranged at the base of short petioles. The pea-like, deep blue flowers bloom on the racemes from April through August. The fruits are oblong pods and ripen bluish black.
