The "Munin-sha-shanbo" (Vaccinium boninense) belongs to Ericaceae (the Heath family). It is a small evergreen tree is endemic to Japan's Ogasawara Islands. It grows on rocky terrain and reaches a height of about 1 m. It branches profusely, forming a shrub-like habit. Young branches are densely covered with short, soft hairs. The leaves are elliptical to broadly elliptical, with entire margins or shallow serrations. From January to April, racemes emerge from the upper leaf axils, bearing white, tubular flowers. The tips of the corolla narrow slightly and are shallowly 5-lobed. There are 10 stamens. The fruit is a spherical berry that ripens to black.
