中国の雲南省からインドシナ半島に分布しています。標高１５００〜２５００メートルの山地に生え、高さは６０〜８０センチほどになります。中国名を「地湧金蓮（ちゆうきんれん）」といい、地面から現れた金色の「はす」という意味です。花の構造は「バナナ」と同じですが、鮮やかな黄色い苞が、目立たない花を包んでいます。

バショウ科ムセーラ属の常緑多年草で、学名は Musella lasiocarpa。英名は Chinese yellow banana。

Chinese yellow banana (Musella lasiocarpa) belongs to Musaceae (the Banana family). It is an evergreen perennial herb that is distributed southward from Yunnan in China to the Indo-China Peninsula. This herb grows in mountains 1500-2500 m elevation and can reach 60-80 cm in height. The flowers resemble the banana in appearance. They are inconspicuous and covered with bright yellow bracts.
