フィリピンやニューギニアが原産です。高さは２〜３メートルほどになり、白色の大きな萼片が特徴です。葉は楕円形から長楕円形で、対生します。花は黄色い小さな筒状花です。フィリピンで改良された園芸品種も出回っています。写真は、ピンク色の萼片がある園芸品種。

アカネ科コンロンカ属の常緑小低木で、学名は Mussaenda philippica。英名はありません。

Mussaenda philippica belongs to Rubiaceae (the Madder family). It is an evergreen shrub that is native to the Philippines and New Guinea. This shrub is about 2 to 3 m high and features large white calyxes. The leaves are elliptic to oblong and opposite. The flowers are small yellow tubular flowers. Improved horticultural varieties are also available in the Philippines. The photos are a cultivar with pink calyx.
