ユーラシア大陸が原産です。わが国へは明治時代のはじめ、牧草として輸入されました。今では各地の道端や草地に野生化しています。「しろつめくさ（白詰草）」よりも大きく、高さは５０〜６０センチになります。５月から８月ごろ、茎の先の球状花序に、小さな紅紫色の花を咲かせます。別名で「あかつめくさ（赤詰草）」とも呼ばれます。 |

マメ科シャジクソウ属の多年草で、学名は Trifolium pratense。英名は Red clover。 |

The Red clover (Trifolium pratense) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Urasian Continent. This herb was introduced into Japan as a meadow grass in the early Meiji Era (1868-1912). Nowadays it is naturalized widely in roadsides and grasslands. It can reach 50-60 cm in height. The small pink flowers come in the spherical inflorescence from May to August. |
