ヨーロッパの地中海沿岸が原産です。湿り気のある非酸性土壌に生え、高さは３０〜９０センチになります。わが国へは、明治時代の初めに飼料用として導入されました。いまでは北海道などで栽培されるほか、各地に帰化しています。葉は３出複葉で、小葉は狭い長楕円形です。５月から９月ごろ、直立した茎の先に、紫色の花を咲かせます。

The Alfalfa (Medicago sativa) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Mediterranean Basin in Europe. This herg grows on moist nonacidic soils, and it can reach 30-90 cm in height. It was also introduced into Japan as an animal consumption in the early days of Meiji Era (1868-1912). Nowadays, it is cultivated in Hokkaido and also naturalized throughout most of Japan. The leaves are trifoliate with narrow oblong leaflets. The purple flowers bloom at the erect stalks from May to September.
