ヨーロッパの地中海沿岸が原産です。湿り気のある非酸性土壌に生え、高さは３０〜９０センチになります。わが国へは、明治時代の初めに飼料用として導入されました。いまでは北海道などで栽培されるほか、各地に帰化しています。葉は３出複葉で、小葉は狭い長楕円形です。５月から９月ごろ、直立した茎の先に、紫色の花を咲かせます。

マメ科ウマゴヤシ属の多年草で、学名は Medicago sativa。英名は Alfalfa。

The alfalfa (Medicago sativa) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a perennial herb that is native to the Mediterranean Basin in Europe. This herg grows on moist nonacidic soils, and it can reach 30-90 cm in height. It was also introduced into Japan as an animal consumption in the early days of Meiji Era (about 130 years ago). Nowadays, it is cultivated in Hokkaido and also naturalized throughout most of Japan. The leaves are trifoliate with narrow oblong leaflets. The purple flowers bloom at the erect stalks from May to September.
