インドが原産です。高さは７〜８メートルになり、葉は羽状複葉で、革質の小葉が６〜１２対つきます。若葉は紅色に垂れ下がります。枝または幹から散形花序をだし、芳香のある花を咲かせます。花弁はなく、花弁状の萼片は赤橙色をしています。また、お釈迦さまがこの木の下で生まれたとされ、その下で悟りを開かれた「菩提樹」、その下で涅槃を迎えられた「沙羅双樹」とともに、仏教の三大聖樹とされています。 |

マメ科ムユウジュ属の常緑小高木で、学名は Saraca asoca。英名は Ashoka。 |

The Ashoka (Saraca asoca) belongs to Fabaceae (the Pea family). It is a semi-tall evergreen tree that is native to India. This tree grows up 7 to 8 m high and has pinnate compound leaves with 6 to 12 pairs of leathery leaflets. The young leaves are crimson and hang down. The umbels are borne on the branches or trunks and bloom fragrant flowers. There are no petals, and the petal-shaped sepals are red-orange. In addition, it is said that Buddha was born under this tree, and it is said to be one of the three major Buddhist sacred trees, along with "Bo tree" (Ficus religiosa) where he was enlightened under it, and "Sal tree" (Shorea robusta) where he was greeted by Nirvana under it. |
