The Red sandalwood (Adenanthera pavonina) belongs to Mimosaceae (the Mimosa family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed from tropical Asia to northern Australia. It grows along the coast of humid tropical biomes and reaches a height of 10 to 20 m. The bark of the trunk is light brown and smooth. The leaves are bipinnate compound with elliptic leaflets. Yellow five-petaled flowers bloom in spikes emerging from the leaf axils. The fruit is a flat achene, 15 to 20 cm long. When ripe, the fruit turns brown, bursts open, and releases bright red, slightly obovate seeds. It is called "孔雀豆" in Taiwanese Chinese and "海紅豆" (hai hong dou) or "相思樹" (xiang si shu) in Chinese. In China, these bright red seeds have long been considered a symbol of mutual love.
