中国が原産です。わが国へは１７世紀以前に渡来したといわれています。おもに畑で栽培されていますが、山野で帰化したものを見ることもあります。雌雄異株です。葉は長心臓形で葉柄が長く、対生あるいは３輪生します。夏、葉腋に穂状花序をつけ、小さな白い花を咲かせます。秋から冬にかけて、葉腋に珠芽（むかご）をつけます。根茎は円柱状で、「やまのいも」に比べて粘りがあまりありません。

ヤマノイモ科ヤマノイモ属の多年草で、学名は Dioscorea batatas。英名は Chinese yam。

The Chinese yam (Dioscorea batatas) belongs to Dioscoreaceae (the Yam family). It is a perennial herb that is native to China. It was introduced into Japan before the 17th century. This herb is cultivated in the fields though sometimes it is naturalized in hill and dale. It is dioecious. The leaves are long cordate with long petioles and opposite or three whorled. The spikes are borne on the axiles and bloom small white flowers in summer. The propagules are borne on the axiles from fall to winter. The rootstocks are columnar and used for food.
