わが国の固有種で、本州の東北地方北部、北海道それに南千島に自生しています。「ちしまきたあざみ（千島北薊）」の亜種です。高山帯の草原に生え、高さは３０〜１００センチになります。茎は直立し、分枝しないか上部で多少分枝します。葉は広卵形から卵形または細長い三角形で互生し、縁に粗い鋸歯があります。７月から８月ごろ、紅紫色の頭花を、散房状の花序に咲かせます。頭花は筒状花だけで構成され、総苞の表面には縮れたくも毛があります。果実は、長さ４ミリほどの痩果です。

キク科トウヒレン属の多年草で、学名は Saussurea riederi ssp. yezoensis。英名はありません。

"Nagaba-kita-azami" (Saussurea riederi ssp. yezoensis) belongs to Asteraceae (the Aster family). It is a perennial herb that is endemic to Japan and native in the northern part of the Tohoku district of Honshu, Hokkaido and the South Kuril Islands. It is a subspecies of "Chishima-kita-azami". This herb grows in alpine meadows and can reach 30-100 cm in height. The stem is upright and unbranched or slightly branched at the top. The leaves are alternate, broad-ovate to ovate or elongated triangles with coarse serrations on the edges. The magenta flower heads bloom in corymbose clusters from July to August. The flower head consists of only tubular flowers, and the surface of the bracts has spider hairs. The fruits are achene, about 4 mm long.
