わが国の本州、東北地方南部から紀伊半島、それに四国・九州に自生しています。山地に生え。高さは５メートルほどになります。葉は掌状に５〜７深裂し、裂片の先は尾状に長く尖ります。最下裂片も半分以上深裂します。５月から６月ごろ、黄緑色の小さな花を、総状に８〜１１個咲かせます。花弁や萼片は時に赤みを帯びます。果実は翼果で、翼は鈍角に開きます。

カエデ科カエデ属の落葉小高木で、学名は Acer australe。英名はありません。

The "Nangoku-mine-kaede" (Acer australe) belongs to Aceraceae (the Maple family). It is a semi-tall deciduous tree that is native from southern Tohoku to the Kii Peninsula in Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu. This tree grows in the mountains and can reach about 5 m in height. The leaves are divided into 5-7 lobes palmately with long caudal tips. The bottom lobes also split more than half. The 8 to 11 small yellow-green flowers bloom in racemed clusters from May to June. The petals and calyxes are sometimes reddish. The fruit is samara, and the wings open at an obtuse angle.
