The "Nankai-itachi-shida" (Dryopteris varia) belongs to the family Dryopteridaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from Chiba Prefecture and westwards of Honshu, Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China, the Philippines, the Indochina Peninsula and India. It grows on the forest floor in mountains and on slopes along the coast, and is 50 to 100 cm tall. The leaves are bipinnate compound, yellowish-green to green, slightly glossy and slightly thick and leathery. The leaf stalk base has reddish-brown to blackish-brown scales. The sorus is located between the midrib and the margin of the pinnule, and the indusium is entire. In Taiwanese, it is called "南海鱗毛蕨", and in Chinese, it is called "変異鱗毛蕨" (bian yi lin mao jue).
