熱帯アジアが原産です。現在では、世界の熱帯から温帯南部に広く帰化しています。茎はよく分枝し、高さは５０センチほどになります。葉は卵形から長卵形で、表面は、縁には鋸歯があります。初夏から夏ごろ、茎頂に集散花序をだし、小さな白色が紫色の花を咲かせます。台湾華語では「狗尾草」、中国語では「大尾揺（da wei yao）」と呼ばれます。

The Indian heliotrope (Heliotropium indicum) belongs to Boraginaceae (the Borage family). It is an annual herb that is native to tropical Asia. This herb is naturalized widely from tropical to southern temperate. It is much-branched and can reach about 50 cm in height. The leave are ovate to long-ovate, wrinkled surface and toothed edges. The cymes are borne on the terminal branches and bloom small white to purple flowers from early summer to mid summer. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "狗尾草", and "大尾揺" (da wei yao) in Chinese.
