The "Nangoku-shikechi-shida" (Athyrium opacum) belongs to the family Woodsiaceae. It is an evergreen fern that is distributed from Kagoshima Prefecture to Tanegashima and Yakushima in Japan, as well as in Taiwan, southern China, Southeast Asia, and South Asia. It grows in moist mountainous areas and reaches a height of 50 to 100 cm. The petioles are dark straw-colored, 20-50 cm long, and have sparse scales at the base. The leaf blades are triangular-ovate, 30-60 cm long, and the leaves are once or twice pinnately compound. There are approximately 10 pairs of leaflets, which are nearly opposite. The spore clusters are brown and short-linear or elliptical in shape. It is designated as Vulnerable (VU) on the Ministry of the Environment's Red List. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "黒葉貞蕨", and "黒葉角蕨" (hei ye jiao jue) in Chinese.
