北アメリカの東部が原産です。ニューファンドランド州からオンタリオ州、南へはテキサス州からフロリダ州に分布しています。沼地などに生え、高さは５０センチほどになります。わが国へもすでに帰化しています。葉は長楕円形で長い葉柄があります。７月から１０月ごろ、茎の上部に輪生状の花序をつけ、白い花を咲かせます。花序の上部が雄花、下部が雌花です。ふつうは雌雄同株ですが、雌雄異株もあります。

オモダカ科オモダカ属の一年草または多年草で、学名は Sagittaria graminea。英名は Chinese arrowhead、Grassy arrowhead。

The Chinese arrowhead (Sagittaria graminea) belongs to Alismataceae (the Water-plantain family). It is an annual or a perennial herb that is native to eastern North America. This herb is distributed southward from Newfoundland-Ontario in Canada to Texas-Florida in the United States. It grows in marshes, ponds and can reach about 50 cm in height. It has been naturalized in Japan. The leaves are oblong with long stalks. The whorled clusters are borne on the upper stems and bloom white flowers in >July to October. The flower is usually monoecious but sometimes dioecious.
