The Oriental white oak (Quercus aliena) belongs to Fagaceae (the Beech family). It is a tall deciduous tree that is distributed southward from Iwate-Akita prefecture of Honshu to Shikoku, Kyushu in Japan, as well as Taiwan, the Korean Peninsula, China and Southeast Asia. This tree grows in mountains and can reach about 25 m in height. The barks are bluckish-gray and furrowed deep longitudially. The leaves are obovate-oblong with acute tips and coarse toothed edges. They are defined by long petioles 1-3 cm long. The flowers come in April as soon as foliation. The fruits are elliptic nuts and ripen in fall. The timbers are used for furnitures or fuelwood. In Taiwanese Chinese, it is called "大槲樹", and "槲櫟" (hu li) in Chinese.
