The Friendship mushroom (Armillaria tabescens) belongs to the family Mycenaceae. It is a fungus that is widely distributed from Honshu, Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan, and other temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. From summer to fall, numerous clusters grow in broadleaf forests on fallen trees or near the roots of trees. The pileus is 4-6 cm in diameter and brownish brown in color. The center of the pileus is densely covered with small scales. It is similar to the "honey mushroom" (Armillaria mellea ssp. nipponica), except that the stalk does not have a ring.
