The "Narihira-dake" (Semiarundinaria fastuosa) belongs to Poaceae (the Grass family). It is a bumboo that is native to Shikoku and Kyushu in Japan. The culm is 3 to 4 cm in diameter and grows up to 8 m tall. The young bamboo shoots are green, but gradually become purplish brown in color. Three branches emerge from each node, and seven to eight branches emerge in the second year. The leaves are narrowly lanceolate, pointed at the tip, and hard. Its Japanese name comes from its beautiful bamboo-like appearance, like that of Ariwara no Narihira (Japanese courtier and waka poet of the early Heian period).
