ヨーロッパ北部と西部に分布しています。沼地や湿原、湿ったヒースなどに生え、高さは１０〜４０センチになります。葉は長さ１５センチほどで線形、しばしばオレンジ色を帯びます。夏に穂状花序をだし、鮮やかな黄色の星形花を咲かせます。果実は濃いオレンジ色で、シェットランド諸島の人々によってサフランに代わる着色料として使用されてきました。

ユリ科キンコウカ属の多年草で、学名は Narthecium ossifragum。英名は Bog asphodel、Lancashire asphodel。

The Bog asphodel (Narthecium ossifragum) belongs to Liliaceae (the Lily family). It is a perennial herb that is distributed in northern and western Europe. It grows in bogs, marshes and wet heaths and is 10-40 cm tall. The leaves are about 15 cm long, linear, and often orange. Spikelets appear in summer and produce bright yellow star-shaped flowers. The fruits are dark orange and have been used as an alternative coloring to saffron by the people of the Shetland Islands.
